EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox appeared to be on their way to tying a club record for consecutive wins.
Instead the Tri-City Dust Devils erased a three-run deficit and went on to defeat the Frogs 6-5 in 11 innings before an announced crowd of 1,312 fans at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Just a fraction of those fans remained when the game ended as rain began in the eighth inning and continued for the duration.
Everett (7-4) saw its winning streak end at seven games while Tri-City improved to 6-5 by salvaging the the final game of the three-game set.
The international tie-breaker is a new rule in minor league baseball where each extra inning begins with a runner on second base.
Justin Paulsen drove in Dwayna Williams-Sutton, and Tre Carter added another RBI single for a 6-4 lead in the top of the 11th.
Everett got one back in the bottom of the 11th when Jake Anchia’s RBI groundout scored Josh Stowers, but couldn’t score the equalizer.
Tri-City took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th when Michael Curry singled in Reinaldo Ilarraza with the go-ahead run.
Stowers pulled the Frogs even in the bottom of the 10th with a single, but Connor Kopach was thrown out trying to get to third base to end the inning and the teams went to the 11th tied 4-4.
The Frogs scored the game’s first three runs and appeared in control of the game.
Kopach led off the bottom of the first with a double off the wall in center field. He scored on an RBI single by Anchia for a 1-0 Everett lead.
Everett added two more in the fourth. Ryne Ogren led off with a walk and scored when a Tri-City error followed a Bobby Honeyman single. Honeyman came home when Matt Sanders hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
But Tri-City answered back with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game 3-3.
Dwayna Williams-Sutton doubled and scored in the fifth and hit a two-run home run in the six to draw the Dust Devils even.
David Ellingson pitched three scoreless innings of relief and struck out three while allowing one hit for Everett.
Dimoar Lopez earned the win in relief for Tri-City while Jamal Wade took the loss
The Sox embark on an eight-game road trip that begins tonight in Spokane.
