EUGENE — The AquaSox High-A West lead shrank back down to only one game Friday night after Eugene’s Sean Roby belted a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning to secure an 8-7 victory for the Emeralds.
Roby’s blast came after Everett pitching recovered from a rough start to twirl six straight scoreless innings after allowing seven runs in the first two frames.
Eugene (55-39) scored six in the first on two home runs, two doubles, two singles and one walk and tacked another run on the second with a sacrifice fly for a 7-2 lead.
Everett (55-37) rallied for a five-run sixth inning behind two-run home runs from Cade Marlowe and Justin Lavey and a solo shot by Dariel Gomez, but the AquaSox were silenced over the final three innings by Austin Reich (2-0), who picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief. He didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out five.
Peyton Alford (0-1) took the loss after Roby redirected his first pitch of the bottom of the ninth over the fence in left-center. He went one inning, allowing one run and two hits with three strikeouts.
Eugene’s Carter Aldrete went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, one run scored and a walk.
Marlowe, Gomez and Lavey each drove in two runs for Everett.
