EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox fell 4-0 on Thursday, as Eugene Emeralds infielder Charlie Szykowny collected three hits and three RBI to power his team to victory.
The Frogs (19-38 second half, 56-67 overall) managed just two hits and two walks against Eugene pitching in the Northwest League game at Funko Field. AquaSox right fielder Carson Jones became Everett’s first baserunner with a walk in the third inning. He later broke up starter Tyler Switalski’s no-hitter with a one-out single in the sixth.
Switalski threw 49 strikes among his 70 pitches across six innings, striking out four batters. Reliever Darien Smith finished off the Frogs, allowing a hit and a walk over the final three frames.
With two outs in the top of the first, Szykowny belted a solo home run to right-center field for his 20th long ball of the year to give Eugene (41-16, 73-50) an early lead. Two innings later, Nate Furman doubled and Jonah Cox singled, allowing Szykowny to hit an RBI single to right field to extend Eugene’s edge to 2-0.
In the top of the fifth, Szykowny hit another RBI single to set the Emeralds ahead 3-0. AquaSox starting pitcher Evan Truitt departed after finishing the top of the fifth inning, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two. Left-hander Jacob Denner followed with two shutout innings while allowing zero hits. Denner also struck out two Emeralds.
Throwing the final two innings of the game for the AquaSox were right-handers Pedro Da Costa Lemos and Brock Moore. Lemos threw one scoreless inning and struck out one, while Moore struck out one and did not allow a hit.
