Must be a Leo: Everett’s Greg Dobbs extended his hitting streak to 10 games Wednesday. Dobbs, who is hitting .571 for August, is batting .488 (20-for-41) during the streak with eight doubles, a triple, a home run, eight runs scored and five runs batted in. He has raised his season average to .293.
Dobbs said he is recognizing pitches really well right now. “That was the problem the first half. I wasn’t recognizing pitches well,” Dobbs said. “But I’ve really been working in batting practice on focusing on the ball out of the pitcher’s hand.
“I had gotten away from using my eyes. I had forgotten how important the eyes are to hitting. The ball looks the same, I’m just seeing it more clearly. Before I’d go up looking for a first pitch fastball, get a change and swing through it. Now I’m recognizing the pitch.”
Dobbs said baseball players learn to be philosophical about hitting streaks and slumps. “It makes you appreciate the good times more,” he said. “It’s a clear case of adversity as a teacher.”
He said players learn a lot about themselves while working their way out of a slump.
“And the coaching help here is unbelievable,” Dobbs said. “The amount of information and the quality of information is so much help.”
