EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox continue to roll.
Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Sox defeated the Spokane Indians 2-1 Saturday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The victory extended Everett’s winning ways. The Sox have won seven straight, and they’ve prevailed 14 of their first 16 games.
Andrew Carraway, a Class AAA pitcher making a rehabilitation start for Everett, threw four hitless innings to get the ball rolling for Everett’s pitchers. Jose Valdivia picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Mountlake Terrace native Aaron Brooks tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the save, his third.
Justin Seager went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to pace Everett’s offense. His infield single snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, then Jack Reinheimer’s RBI single in the fifth gave the Sox a 2-0 lead.
Kevin Torres homered in the sixth to get Spokane (6-10) within one. Then in the ninth Ryan Cordell sent a ball to the center-field wall with a runner on base and two out, but James Zamarripa caught the ball leaping against the wall to end the game.
Fast one?
Jack Reinheimer broke up a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the seventh of Friday’s game against Spokane, spurring the Sox to a 5-3 victory. But he may have gotten away with one in the top of the seventh to help keep the game scoreless.
The Indians had runners on first and second with nobody out. The Sox were expecting Janluis Castro to bunt, but instead he hit a chopper to third that bounded off the glove of third baseman DJ Peterson, who was playing in. Reinheimer, playing shortstop, had been racing behind Peterson to cover third in anticipation of a bunt, and the ball bounced right to him as he approached the bag. It appeared Reinheimer never touched third before he threw to first, and that the Indians would have runners at second and third with one out. However, the out was called at third and at first, much to the chagrin of Spokane manager Tim Hullett, and the double play effectively squelched the rally.
But did Reinheimer actually touch third base?
“I honestly have no idea, none whatsoever,” Reinheimer said.
23 players penalized
Everett had 23 players fined by the Northwest League for their involvement in a bench-clearing incident last Sunday against Hillsboro.
A flash point occurred when, on a play at the plate, Everett’s Jamodrick McGruder knocked over Hillsboro catcher Yosbel Gutierrez. Gutierrez popped up and immediately got in McGruder’s face, McGruder shoved Gutierrez away, then both benches emptied. The situation resolved itself without further incident.
A little-known rule in Minor League Baseball is that anyone who comes off the bench or from the bullpen is subject to a fine. That rule was not enforced in the Northwest League in the past. However, the league has a new president in Micheal Ellis, and he levied the $25 fines. The fine money goes into a fund that’s distributed to charities at the end of the season.
Everett manager Rob Mummau declined to comment on the fines.
