Archbishop Murphy wins tourney

VICTORIA, B.C – In the Can Am Santa Slam Tournament final, the Archbishop Murphy girls basketball team blitzed Belmont with a first-quarter flurry of scoring and never looked back in its 65-39 win.

Archbishop Murphy coach Bill Kelley was surprised by his team’s explosive first half, despite playing three games in a 40-hour span.

“We struggled in the first two games in the first half,” Kelley said. “This time we challenged them to come out with a little fire and they did that.”

Lisa Coate had 12 of her 18 points while Lauren Lasswell and Krista Eknes both put up eight each in the Wildcats’ 28-point first quarter.

“All of our first quarter points came from only three players,” Kelly said. “They put the game away right away.”

According Kelley, Kat Taylor, The Herald’s girls soccer player of the year, grabbed 28 steals for the Wildcats. Teammate Katy Westlund made seven steals as the Cascade Conference defense dominated Belmont.

Coate went 8-for-13 from the field and added 10 rebounds and four assists. Eknes made three 3-pointers against Belmont and 11 for the entire tournament.
