Area soccer players earn academic honors

Justin Abel, a senior midfielder at Seattle Pacific University, was named last week to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic all-star soccer team.

Abel, a Snohomish native and business administration major, has a 3.95 grade-point average, the best among the 28 male student-athletes named to the team.

SPU sophomore midfielder Alex Nelson, a graduate of Meadowdale High School, also was named to the squad. Nelson has a 3.53 GPA in engineering science.

Selected to the women’s team was Western Washington University goalkeeper Teresa Fish, a Monroe High School graduate. Fish, a senior majoring in biology, has a 3.35 GPA.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of athletic competition.

Gymnastics

Leading Edge wins first meet: The gymnasts of the Everett-based Leading Edge Academy opened their season with a win Oct. 13 at the Hot Air Classic in Bellingham.

Sarah Kaye of Lake Stevens had the highest overall individual score in Level 5, winning the 11-year-old division with 37.225 points after placing first on the beam (9.375) and vault (9.30). Brooke Allen (36.675) of Mill Creek finished second and Alexandra Carney (34.80) of Everett came in third.

Ashley Albrecht of Everett placed first in the 9-year-old division with 36.475 points. In the 12-year-old division, Anna Mancao of Everett came in first with 36.6 points and Jennifer Erickson of Snohomish took second (34.85).

Danielle Wilson of Marysville finished with 36.725 points, the highest overall score in Level 7. Wilson won the beam (9.15).

In Level 6, Thalisa Orn of Everett placed first in the 10-and-under division with 35.325 points, followed by Kasandra Numair of Everett who was second (35.0). Anna Pischer of Mill Creek was first in the 11-year-old division with 35.20 points, Jillian Ohlemeier of Stanwood was second (34.625) and Olga Yevsyugov of Everett third (34.20).

Kaylee Piper of Everett won the 11-and-up division of Level 4 with a final score of 35.775, and Laura Bennison of Lake Stevens finished second in the 10-year-old division with 35.65 points.
