Associated Press basketball rankings: Girl power

The first thing I noticed when I look at this week’s Associated Press basketball rankings was: What is it about our area’s girls teams?

Four local girls basketball teams are ranked among the top 10 in Classes 4A (No. 4 Snohomish, No. 10 Jackson), 3A (No. 4 Meadowdale) and 2A (No. 2 Archbishop Murphy). This isn’t a new phenomenon — Snohomish, Meadowdale and Murphy have been ranked highly all season, and their programs have been strong every since I started writing for The Herald. Is it the coaching? The youth programs? The select-team experience?

The local girls’ success is even more impressive when you compare it to the boys rankings, where only one team from our area (2A No. 6-ranked Archbishop Murphy) is in the top 10.

Of course, rankings obviously don’t mean much; these polls could get turned upside down during the postseason over the next month-plus. But nevertheless it’s fun to see Snohomish County’s girls teams receive so much respect.

Before I get to the AP hoops rankings, here’s a link to The Herald’s 2008-2009 All-Name Basketball Team. In case you missed it, I posted the All-Name Team earlier this week. I had a good time compiling it and I hope it’s at least slightly entertaining.

OK, here are the AP polls.
