Athletes of the Week

The senior athlete had no trouble getting off the ground during Thursday’s meet with Jackson. He won both hurdles races and set personal career bests in the long (20 feet, 8 inches) and triple jumps (40-6).

“He’s a senior and has matured to be an excellent athlete,” Lynnwood track coach Duane Lewis said. “I keep giving him a bad time. I say, “You’re not perfect. You only have a 3.94 grade point average.’”

Although he has one of the state’s best triple jump marks this season at 40-8, Porter’s strongest event is the 300-meter hurdles, Lewis said. As a junior, Porter ran out of his shoe during the 110 hurdles final at the Northwest District meet and then failed to qualify for state in the 300. But Lewis thinks he could make it to state in three events and a relay this year.

“His long jump is very competitive,” Lewis said. “He’s gone 21 (feet), but scratched.”

Other top boys track performers: Derek Fekkes, Stanwood; Chris Chambers, Jackson; Chris Wada, Shorewood.

The junior pitcher threw three shutouts, a no-hitter in a 6-0 victory over Mariner, and one-hitters in 7-0 and 10-0 victories over Jackson and Lynnwood.

“She’s just getting stronger to the point where she can pitch three games in a week,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Mike Pittis said. “Her control has been exceptional.”

In 49 innings pitched this season, Adix has allowed just one earned run while striking out 93 batters and walking just six. Now 5-2 her only losses were to Everett and Shorewood. She is scheduled to pitch today against Shorecrest and its all-star hurler, Kristan Thorson.
