Baseball notes: Royals add Ramirez to bullpen

ROYALS: Kansas City purchased the contract of Horacio Ramirez from Class AAA Omaha on Sunday, adding the veteran left-hander to their bullpen.

Ramirez went 8-7 with a 7.16 ERA in 20 starts last season with Seattle, which released him in spring training. He has a 38-29 record with a 4.61 ERA in 106 career games, all but two starts.

“He’s able to pitch against left-handers and right-handers,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He’s stretched out. He’s an experienced guy. We’ll probably use him long for the most part, but we’ll utilize him as needed and help to get to the guys we’re using in the back end in Ramon Ramirez and Ron Mahay to get to (Joakim) Soria.”

The Royals signed Horacio Ramirez to a minor league contract on May 21, and he went 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts with Omaha.

“Last year I was on the (disabled list) for about six weeks for shoulder tendinitis, shoulder discomfort,” said Ramirez, who played for Atlanta for four seasons before joining the Mariners. “It kind of bugged me after that. I was never 100 percent, but I don’t think that’s an excuse for what I did. I was still able to go out there when the ball was given to me.

“I just didn’t make the adjustment real well going from the National League to the American League.”

MARLINS: Florida called up outfielder Jai Miller from Class AAA Albuquerque to provide some depth after center fielder Alfredo Amezaga injured his left groin while running the bases Saturday. Florida also placed right-handed reliever Burke Badenhop on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 14 with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.

BREWERS: Second baseman Rickie Weeks was activated from the disabled list and started against the Baltimore Orioles. Weeks had been out since spraining his left knee trying to turn a double play in Colorado on June 6.

ORIOLES: Baltimore designated infielder Freddie Bynum for assignment Sunday, and manager Dave Trembley said Alex Cintron will be the team’s third starting shortstop this season. Bynum hit .192 with five RBIs in 34 games. The Orioles have 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors. Luis Hernandez was the starting shortstop to begin the season, but was outrighted to Class AAA Norfolk earlier this month after batting .241 in 36 games.

CARDINALS: St. Louis placed shortstop Cesar Izturis on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right hamstring. Izturis was injured Friday night and came out of the Cardinals’ 5-4 victory over Boston in the fourth inning. He is batting .241 with one homer and 12 RBI in 67 games this season.

TWINS: Minnesota will activate utility man Nick Punto from the disabled list in time for him to join the team in San Diego on Tuesday. Punto has spent a total of 40 days during two stints on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Infielder Matt Macri will be optioned to Class AAA Rochester to make room for Punto. Macri batted .367 with a double, a home run and four RBI in 14 games.

ASTROS: Pitcher Shawn Chacon was dropped from the starting rotation and will be used in the bullpen. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 starts this season.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh placed rookie starter Phil Dumatrait on the 15-day disabled list with left rotator cuff tendinitis. Reliever T.J. Beam was promoted from Class AAA Indianapolis to fill the roster spot.
