Big inning for Snohomish spells doom for Kamiak

MUKILTEO – Two outs, so what.

Trailing by a run with two outs in the fifth inning, the Snohomish baseball team rallied for five runs in the inning to defeat Kamiak 10-8 Saturday afternoon.

The win keeps Snohomish undefeated at 4-0 overall, while Kamiak dropped to 2-1 with the loss.

In the pivotal fifth, Stephen Sperry led the Panther’s charge.

With one swing of the bat Sperry knocked in the go-ahead run on a two-run double. Snohomish’s Trevor Johnson, Peter Moormeier, and Derek Bennion all singled following Sperry to drive in three more runs and give the Panthers a comfortable lead at 10-6.

Moormeier’s feats weren’t relegated to the fifth inning, however. Moormeier finished the day a healthy 4-for-4 with a double and a home-run and five RBI. Also, in the field, Moormeier made a running catch in the gap to save two runs in the fourth inning.

“Peter Moormeier had a great day,” said Snohomish coach Kim Hammons. “His catch out in right field was incredible.”

Kamiak came back to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within two, but Snohomish’s Mike Jackson closed the deal for the Panthers pitching a no-hit sixth and seventh innings.

Nate Santiago went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple and played solid defense at shortstop to lead the Knights.

Cascade 7, Oak Harbor 5 0: Tommy Leon of Cascade was 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double and 2 RBI as the Bruins downed Oak Harbor in a Wesco North Division game. Oak Harbor pitcher Anthony Martinez also was 2-for-3, including a double and 2 RBI.

In the opening game, also the season opener for the visiting Loggers, Bryce Boyd was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and 3 RBI. Matt Reese was 4-for-5 with a double and a home run and 3 RBI.

In the night cap, Orcas had a five run second inning to take an insurmountable lead over the Loggers. Reese took the loss, his first of the season.

Stanwood finished in second place, followed by Lake Stevens in third. Cascade finished fifth.
