Boys basketball: Mountlake Terrace defeats Lynnwood

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace relied on strong post play as the Hawks defeated Lynnwood 45-35 Saturday night in a Wesco South boys basketball game at Mountlake Terrace High School.

Six-foot-seven senior forward Tarik Kundeklija had 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks for Mountlake Terrace (1-2 overall). Kundeklija teamed with Karsten Strieby (15 points) to score 30 points in the paint for the Hawks.

“We jumped out early but Lynnwood kept fighting,” Mountlake Terrace head coach Nalin Sood said.

After spotting Mountlake Terrace a 12-2 lead, Lynnwood cut the Hawks’ lead to three by halftime.

“Lynnwood pressed. We missed some shots and had some turnovers in the second quarter,” Sood said.

Geoff Meinken scored eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Lynnwood. Lynnwood’s Aaron Matzen finished with a team-high nine points.

It was the first league game of the season for both teams.

Cedarcrest 59, Oak Harbor 53: At Duvall, Cedarcrest’s Cameron Padron scored a game-high 19 points and had 13 rebounds in the Red Wolves’ non-conference win over Oak Harbor. Seniors Eric McCardle and Bryce Schulle each scored 13 points for the Wildcats.
