Bring on the Stilly Cup!

If you live in Stanwood or Arlington, odds are you’ll be at Larson Stadium tonight. That’s where the Stanwood and Arlington High School football teams will clash in the latest edition of the emotionally charged Stilly Cup game.

Neither team is off to an impressive start this season — Arlington won its first game last week after dropping its first three contests, and Stanwood’s only victory came in week two against still-winless Monroe.

Who cares?

The crowd is always pumped up to see which team claims the Stilly Cup, named for the Stillaguamish River Valley that connects the neighboring communities. The tradition was started by former Arlington coach Don Gibbons and former Stanwood coach Terry Ennis.

According to Arlington athletic director Allen Jefferson, before tonight’s game there will be a moment of silence in honor of Ennis, who died of cancer Sept. 12 at age 63.

Arlington appears to be a slight favorite, and over the years it has dominated the rivalry. Through last season Arlington had won 26 of 36 games in the series, according to results printed on the trophy.
