Cascade beats Stanwood 9-2 to secure a district playoff berth

EVERETT – Cascade approached Friday’s baseball game against Stanwood with only its own interests in mind – to win the game and earn a 4A District 1 playoff berth.

Nevertheless, the Bruins’ 9-2 victory over the Spartans proved beneficial to more than just Cascade. Lake Stevens and idle Marysville-Pilchuck also rode into the playoffs by virtue of the Bruins’ win.

Stanwood practically invited Cascade on base, allowing seven Bruin base runners on a combination of walks and hit batters.

“We really challenged the kids to get out early and play big ball,” said Cascade coach Pat Opel. “We were a lot more selective at the plate, not as anxious.”

Cascade capitalized on the Spartan gifts and scored six runs in the first two innings.

Cascade starting pitcher Brad McGava gave up just two runs in the fourth and struck out five.

Jeff Mugge was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Nick Fischer had a two-run triple in the sixth inning to pad the Bruins’ lead. Third baseman Clayton Shaw was 2-for-4 with a double.

With the win, the first-place Panthers remain two games ahead of Cascade with two games remaining.
