Cascade ekes out boys tennis victory over Stanwood

EVERETT – It came down to the end, with Cascade’s Wade Bovard outlasting Stanwood’s Nick Planiuk in a No. 3 singles match that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) as the Bruins earned a 4-3 Western Conference North Division boys tennis victory Monday at Cascade High School.

“This was an exciting meet,” said Cascade head coach Bob Martin. “It doesn’t get any better then this.”

With the two teams splitting the first six matches, everyone watched and waited for the No. 3 singles match between Bovard and Planiuk to end.

“This was a great battle and Stanwood has good players, but we needed this win,” Martin said.

With the victory, the Bruins take sole possession of second place in the Wesco North behind undefeated Snohomish (8-0). Cascade improved to 6-1 in league and overall.

In another long match at No. 4 singles, Chad Schroeder of Cascade kept his unbeaten string intact with a 7-6, (9-7), 6-2 win.

“Our kids came through and just outlasted Stanwood,” Martin said.

With Stanwood holding a 3-2 lead Cascade’s No. 3 doubles team of Trevor Wade and Nathan Escalona evened the score with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory over Zach Upton and Erik Gustafson and then it came down to the Bovard Planiuk match.

Stanwood dropped to third place in the standings at 6-2 in league and overall.

Meadowdale 6, Lynnwood 1: The Mavericks swept the Royals in singles play, losing only five games in the Wesco South meet. Jared Wachtveitl and Boera Neth each won their matches by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores.

Everett 6, Mariner 1: Sam Wertheimer won his match in three sets including a tie-breaker to lead the Seagulls to the Wesco South victory. No. 1 singles player Bennett Johnson and the No 4 doubles team of Trevor Swezey and Chris Nichols shut out their opponents. Pablo Tyler had the lone victory for Mariner.

Lynden Christian 3, Mount Baker 0: At Mount Baker H.S., The Lyncs (3-2) defeated the Mountaineers (0-5) by the scores of 15-2, 15-5, 15-11 in the North Cascades Conference match. Ashley Kaemingk led Lynden Christian with nine kills while Jenn Flannery, Alicia Dickinson and Megan Wright combined to serve 16-for-16 with two aces for Mount Baker.
