Cedarcrest beats King’s to break second-place tie

DUVALL — A beautiful game well played still requires one side to lose.

The King’s girls soccer team was on the losing end Thursday night, falling to Cedarcrest 2-1 in a Cascade Conference match at Cedarcrest High School.

King’s and Cedarcrest entered the game tied for second place in the Cascade Conference, a situation that hadn’t changed after more than 34 minutes of scoreless play.

“Both teams had a lot of defense going on,” King’s head coach Nicole Gabelein said. “It was a good match to watch. Two aggressive, talented teams put on a good show.”

The Knights (4-2 in league, 4-2-1 overall) broke the deadlock, with Julia Crosby finding the back of the net in the 35th minute with an assist from Beka Lampe.

The Red Wolves (5-1, 7-1-0) didn’t take long to respond, with Erin Kearney sinking a penalty kick in the 38th minute after a King’s hand ball.

Kearney assisted on the game-winning goal, sending a free kick from 20 yards out to Missy Dowd, who put the ball into the net from the left side in the 63rd minute.
