SPOKANE — The Spokane Chiefs have owned the second period. The Everett Silvertips have been owned in the second period. So no surprise that the second period was when the Chiefs blew past the Tips Saturday.
Spokane scored three unanswered goals during the second, and the Chiefs went on to rout the Silvertips 5-1. It was Everett’s second lopsided loss in Spokane in eight days, the Tips having lost to the Chiefs 5-0 on Oct. 3.
Dustin Donaghy scored early in the period, then Ryan Letts and David Conrad scored a minute apart late in the period as the Chiefs overturned a 1-0 Everett lead.
Spokane has now outscored its opponents 16-4 in the second period, while Everett has been outscored 13-3.
Drayson Bowman and Mike Betz added third-period goals for Spokane (6-1-0-2), which outshot Everett 48-20 despite missing top center Mitch Wahl because of a suspension. Dustin Tokarski stopped 19 shots to earn the win in goal.
Shane Harper scored the lone goal for Everett (3-4-1-0). Shayne Barrie made 43 saves in goal for the Tips.
Spokane trailed 1-0 after one period, despite outshooting the Tips 22-7. But the Chiefs broke through in a big way in the second.
First, the Chiefs tied it 3:22 in when Donaghy slapped a shot past Barrie to make it 1-1.
Then Spokane scored twice in a minute late in the period to take control of the game. Letts scored at 16:53, putting in a rebound on the power play. Then 59 seconds later Conrad scored on a wraparound for his first WHL goal, making it 3-1.
Spokane pulled away with two more goals in a minute span midway through the third, Bowman scoring off the rush on the power play at 11:21 and Betz scoring on a backhander at 12:15. For Betz it was also his first WHL goal.
Everett’s goal came just 1:52 into the game when Harper banged in a loose puck after Kyle Beach’s shot rebounded off the back boards.
Prior to the game the Tips reassigned 18-year-old defenseman Brenden Stephen. The 6-foot-7 Stephen, who had not dressed yet this season, will join the Quesnel Millionaires of the British Columbia Hockey League. The reassignment leaves 25 players on Everett’s roster — 15 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.
