Clement homers as Pirates top Diamondbacks 6-3

PHOENIX — Aki Iwamura and Jeff Clement homered off Arizona ace Dan Haren and Zach Duke limited the Diamondbacks to four hits in seven innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 6-3 victory Saturday night.

Duke threw six scoreless inning before Arizona’s Mark Reynolds hit a monster two-run homer some 476 feet onto the patio in front of the Friday Front Row Sport’s Grill in left field, the seventh-longest home run at Chase Field.

Duke (2-0), whose start was moved up a day so he could face Haren, only struck out two and walked two but baffled Arizona’s batters into groundouts and pop outs.

Counting the last four innings of his opening day victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the left-hander threw 10 straight scoreless innings before Reynolds emphatically ended the streak.

Haren (1-1) was off his game from the start, giving up five runs in the first four innings, capped by Iwamura’s two-run homer in the fourth.

Earlier in the fourth, Ronny Cedeno doubled over the head of left fielder Conor Jackson to bring in a run. Clement hit a leadoff homer in the second.

Octavio Dotel pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save in his first opportunity.

The Diamondbacks had the bases loaded and no outs in the eight but came away with just one run on Tony Abreu’s sacrifice fly. Reliever Brendan Donnelly struck out Justin Upton and left-hander Javier Lopez fanned Adam Laroche to end the inning.

Arizona catcher Miguel Montero left the game in the second inning after injuring his right knee running out a grounder to the pitcher. He was trying to avoid Duke’s tag when he landed awkwardly just before reaching the bag.

The only hits off Duke were singles by Abreu in the first and Reynolds in the fifth.

Haren, who given up a run on three hits through seven innings in his opening day win against San Diego, allowed six runs — five earned — on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. He did have nine strikeouts and walked two, throwing 108 pitches. He fanned Ryan Doumit four times.

The Pirates got a leadoff single from Iwamura in the first. He advanced on a fielder’s choice, then scored on Garrett Jones’ single. Clement’s homer to right field on a 1-0 pitch made it 2-0.

Andy LaRoche’s one-out single started the three-run fourth. After Duke’s sacrifice bunt moved him to second, Cedeno slammed a 1-0 pitch over Jackson’s head to put Pittsburgh up 3-0. Iwamura’s two-out homer, also to right, came on a 2-2 pitch and it was 5-0.

The Pirates got an unearned run in the seventh when second baseman Kelly Johnson muffed Jones’ bouncer, allowing Andrew McCutchen to score from third.

NOTES: Arizona’s RHP Brandon Webb is to play catch on Monday for the first time since he receive a cortisone injection on March 30. Webb has had a slow recovery from shoulder surgery. … The Pirates improved to 3-8 at Chase Field over the last four years. … Abreu started his first game for the Diamondbacks. … Duke, who also started last season 2-0, won consecutive games for the first time since last May 17. … Counting last season, Haren has allowed five earned runs in five of his last six starts.
