College Football | National roundup

No. 2 Georgia 56, Central Michigan 17: At Athens, Ga., Knowshon Moreno rushed for 168 yards and tied his career high with three TDs, while massive defensive end Demarcus Dobbs rumbled for a 78-yard score after picking off a deflected pass to lead the Bulldogs (2-0)over the Chippewas (1-1).

No. 3 Ohio St. 26, Ohio 14: At Columbus, Ohio, lightly regarded even in their Mid-American Conference, the Bobcats (0-2) put a scare into Ohio St. (2-0) before the Buckeyes righted things in the fourth quarter. With star tailback Chris Wells sidelined by a foot injury, the Buckeyes struggled until Brandon Saine’s short plunge on the third play of the final quarter finally put them on top.

No. 5 Florida 26, Miami 3: At Gainesville, Fla., Tim Tebow threw two TD passes, speedster Percy Harvin ran for a score and the Gators (2-0) used a swarming defensive effort to beat the Hurricanes (1-1) for the first time since 1985. The rebuilding Hurricanes, three-TD underdogs, hung close for three quarters with the Gators, who had averaged more than 40 points at Florida Field with Tebow as the starting quarterback. Tebow finished 21-for-35 passing for 256 yards and two TD passes, and he also ran 13 times for 55 yards.

No. 6 Missouri 52, Southeast Missouri 3: At Columbia, Mo., Chase Daniel threw three TD passes in the first half and Derrick Washington scored three times, helping the Tigers (2-0) run up a quick 42-point lead against the Redhawks (1-1) before calling in the reserves. Missouri scored on its first five possessions, Sean Weatherspoon returned an interception for a score and the Tigers ended up three points shy of the school record for first-half scoring against Kansas in 1969.

No. 9 Auburn 27, Southern Miss 13: At Auburn, Ala., Chris Todd completed 21 of 31 passes for 248 yards in his first start as the Tigers (2-0) beat the Golden Eagles (1-1). The junior college transfer might have ended the Tigers’ quarterback question by completing an array of short and mid-range passes and effectively running the new spread offense.

No. 10 Texas 42, UTEP 13: At El Paso, Texas, Colt McCoy passed for 282 yards and four TDs to lead the Longhorns (2-0) over the Miners (0-2), who have lost eight straight dating back to last season.

No. 11 Wisconsin 51, Marshall 14: At Madison, Wis., Allan Evridge threw for 308 yards and a TD as the Badgers (2-0) reeled off 51 straight points against the Thundering Herd (1-1) after trailing 14-0.

No. 12 Texas Tech 35, Nevada 19: At Reno, Nev., Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree hooked up for an 82-yard TD pass and Eric Morris returned a punt 86 yards for a score to lead the Red Raiders (2-0) over the Wolf Pack (1-1).

No. 13 Alabama 20, Tulane 6: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Javier Arenas returned a punt 87 yards for a TD and the Crimson Tide (2-0) held on to beat the Green Wave (0-1).

No. 14 Kansas 29, Louisiana Tech 0: At Lawrence, Kan., Dezmon Briscoe broke six tackles to turn a short pass into a 48-yard TD, and Todd Reesing threw for a career-high 412 yards and three scores in the Jayhawks (2-0) win over the Bulldogs (1-1).

No. 17 South Florida 31, UCF 24 (OT): At Orlando, Fla., Matt Grothe threw for 346 yards and three TDs, including a 25-yarder to Taurus Johnson in overtime, as the Bulls (2-0) beat the Golden Knights (1-1).

No. 20 Wake Forest 30, Mississippi 28: At Winston-Salem, N.C., Sam Swank kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds to play, capping a dramatic final minute as the Demon Deacons (2-0) rallied to beat the Rebels (1-1).

No. 22 Utah 42, UNLV 21: At Salt Lake City, Brian Johnson threw for two TDs and scored on a 56-yard run as the Utes beat the Rebels (1-1). Utah scored three TDs in the third quarter and pulled away after a shaky first half.

No. 24 Illinois 47, Eastern Illinois 21: At Champaign, Ill., Juice Williams ran for 174 yards and two TDs to lead the Illini (1-1) over the Panthers (0-2), a Championship Subdivision school.
