Gymnastics Plus of Snohomish captured five gold medals at the Regional Trampoline Championships held May 22-23 in Portland, Ore.
The event drew athletes from Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Hawaii.
Garrett Rene, 17, of Snohomish, led Gymnastics Plus with two gold medals. Rene, competing in the 15-and-older age group, won gold on both the trampoline and the double mini trampoline in the Level 7 division.
Other gold medal winners for Snohomish Plus included Jonathan Bedier, 14, of Mukilteo (trampoline, Level 8, 13-14 division), Kaila Fox, 14, of Snohomish (power tumbling, Level 5, 13-14 division) and Rhiannon Ballard, 13, of Snohomish (trampoline, Level 5, 13-14 division).
Each of the winners earned a spot in the nationals, scheduled for July 13-19 in Tampa, Fla.
Volleyball
Northshore headed to nationals: The Northshore Juniors 16 Volleyball Team is one of 48 squads from around the nation invited to participate in the Junior Olympics Invitational, scheduled for June 24-27 in Austin, Texas.
The Northshore roster includes 10 players from Snohomish County high schools: Lanae Cox and Rhonda Shively of Lynnwood; Leotia Dahlseng, Whitney Nichols and Mackenzie Stout of Snohomish; Lauren Nissen of Lake Stevens; Stevie Olsen and Kaytee Thomas of Marysville-Pilchuck; Sarah Schemenauer of Stanwood, and Ganelle Swehla of Arlington.
Track and Field
20-year-old record falls: Mary Ochiltree, an eighth-grader at Lake Stevens Middle School, broke the school record in the high jump when she cleared 5 feet during a meet May 17 at Gateway Middle School in Everett. The old record of 4-11 was set in 1984.
Baseball
Two local players make Rijo Junior Olympic Team: Eighth-graders Chris Powers and Riley Tubbs were selected from a field of 90 athletes to play for the Rijo Athletic Junior Olympic Team. Powers and Tubbs are eligible to qualify for the 72-team Junior Olympic tournament, be held June 18-26 in Peoria and Surprise, Ariz.
