COMMUNITY ROUNDUP: Everett rowing wins five medals at NW Masters

Twenty Everett Rowing Association adult athletes competed at the USRowing Northwest Masters Regional Championships Friday through Sunday at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver.

The Everett club finished with three silver medals and two bronze medals out of 14 race entries at the event for adult rowers from the Pacific Northwest, northern California and Canada.

Competing by age groups, the mixed AA-A (21-35) quad earned a silver medal. The boat included Brooke Heichel, Doug Carr, Clinton Seal, and Amanda Ruksznis.

Seal and Carr also competed in the men’s AA-A double and earned a silver medal.

Seal placed first in the men’s single A-B (27-42) event with a time of 4:06.2. After an age adjustment for the category, Seal earned an overall bronze medal for the event.

Also winning a bronze medal was Amanda Ruksznis, in the women’s AA-A single.

Next up for the masters team is the Green Lake Extravaganza Regatta on Aug. 1.

Vertical World head to nationals

The Vertical World Climbing Team from Everett competed at the recent Sport Climbing Series Division 1 Championships in Sacramento.

The competition included 166 climbers representing 23 teams from Washington, northern California, northern Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Alaska.

Fifteen members of the Vertical World team received invitations to the national championships in Sandy, Utah, July 10-12, where they will compete for spots on the U.S. national team. The national team will move on to the Continental Championships and the Junior World Championships.

The Vertical World team included Owen Anderson, third, Male Junior; Alex Fritz, first, Male Youth-A; Aran Kagen, third, Male Youth-B; Sam Wolff, fourth, Male Youth-B; Kale Perrone, fourth, Male Youth-C; Sean Bailey, fourth, Male Youth-C; Rudolph Ruana, fourth, Male Youth-D; Charlotte Hill, first, Female Junior; Erin Gurley, second, Female Junior; Chelsea Mackaman-Lofland, third, Female Junior; Emma Sherman, fourth, Female Junior; Victoria Cartwright, first, Female Youth-A; Amelia Fischer-Linnett, fourth, Female Youth-A; Audrey Hsu, third, Female Youth-B; and Sidney Trinidad, first, Female Youth-D.

The Junior division is for athletes with birthdays in 1990-91, Youth-A 1992-93, Youth-B 1994-95; Youth-C 1996-97 and Youth-D 1998-2007.

Terrace man wins pole vault title

Brad Walker, of Mountlake Terrace, won his third outdoor national pole vault title Saturday at the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. After clearing 18 feet, 21/2 inches, Walker cleared 18-101/4 on his first try. Three additional vaulters cleared the same height, but had earlier misses to give Walker the victory.

M-P grad qualifies for worlds

Jarred Rome, a 1995 graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck, threw the discus 208 feet, 5 inches to take second place at the U.S. Track and Field Championships, qualifying him for his third world championship team.
