I was clearing out my e-mail in box when I came across a message I received from reader Tim Thornton last week that had slipped my mind. In that e-mail Thornton wanted to know more about former Everett star center Peter Mueller and the concussions that have plagued his NHL career, including wiping out his entire 2010-11 season with the Colorado Avalanche. He thought Mueller’s struggles were particularly topical considering NHL superstar Sidney Crosby is currently dealing with similar issues.
That sparked a memory of something I recently read on Gregg Drinnan’s blog about another former Silvertip, defenseman Eric Doyle. Doyle told Kamloops Blazers broadcaster Jon Keen that he’s had to end his hockey career because of post-concussion syndrome.
Concussions have increasingly become a subject of concern in hockey circles. Last season Everett had far too many players suffer concussions on blows to the head. The examples of Doyle and others further reinforce the need to address the problem.
