A surprising announcement was delivered by Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham today. While addressing the media at this morning’s press conference, Willingham announced that cornerback Cory Nicol was no longer with the team.
Willingham did not go into detail as to why Nicol, a walk-on from Woodinville High School who previously played at Orange Coast College, decided to leave the program.
Nicol had been praised by coaches for his play in fall camp, and was said to be competing for a starting spot at cornerback opposite Roy Lewis.
When Nicol was a no show at practice Saturday, his teammate were surprised to find out he left the team.
“It’s terribly unfortunate,” said Lewis. “I thought Cory was happy. He definitely came in and made some plays and proved that he could play. He was definitely in a spot to contribute to the team. I don’t know the reason behind it. Everything seemed really good. His morale seemed really good. I came to practice one day and he wasn’t there. It’s just sad to see.”
Nicol’s departure means freshman Vonzell McDowell, a product of Seattle’s Rainier Beach High, will be the other starting cornerback.
