Cornett shoots 4-over 74 at U.S. Amateur

Kyle Cornett of Mill Creek opened with a 4-over-par 74 Monday during the first of two stroke-play rounds at the United States Amateur golf tournament at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Cornett, playing the North Course in Monday’s round, had bogeys on the fourth and fifth holes and a birdie at No. 6 to make the turn at 1-over. But he had bogeys on three of his last five holes.

The 20-year-old Cornett, a 2013 graduate of Jackson High School and a junior-to-be member of the Seattle University golf team, will play Tuesday’s second round on Olympia Fields CC’s South Course.

The tournament began with 312 golfers representing 20 countries. After today’s second round, the field will be cut to 64 and the tournament will continue in a match-play format with a champion decided Sunday.
