Coupeville gains momentum going into district

COUPEVILLE — The Coupeville Wolves ruined the Cedarcrest Red Wolves chance to celebrate a postseason berth, and in doing so gained some momentum heading into next week’s 1A District 1 tournament.

Brian Miller scored 14 points and Alex Evans added 13 as Coupeville (7-7 in league, 11-9 overall) defeated Cedarcrest 49-39 at Coupeville High School Friday night.

Miller, a 6-foot-7 post, added 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Sparked by three 3-pointers by Evans, the Wolves jumped out to a 22-14 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

“That got us off to a pretty good start,” Coupeville head coach Randy King said.

It was the second straight game that the Wolves held their opponent to fewer than 40 points.

On Tuesday, Coupeville defeated Archbishop Murphy 48-35.

“Our defense has been coming around,” King said, “(Cedarcrest) has been scoring pretty well and we held them down. We talked about stopping the penetration and stopping their point guard.”

Coupeville will play Friday Harbor at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out district game at Coupeville.

Louie LaBate scored 11 points to lead Cedarcrest (8-4, 13-6), who were playing without forward Cullen Hammontree, who sat out the game due to illness.
