An estimated 200 racers in kayaks, outrigger canoes and paddleboards are expected for this weekend’s sixth annual Deception Pass Dash on Bowman Bay near Deception Pass State Park on north Whidbey Island.
The two-day event begins today with a free paddling demonstration and clinic from noon to 4 p.m. at Bowman Bay, adjacent to the state park. Guests can try out kayaks, surfskis, outrigger canoes and other paddle craft in the protected water of Bowman Bay.
Sunday’s race, which begins at 10:20 a.m. from Bowman Bay, has attracted 175 pre-registered racers in 27 different categories of human-powered craft.
The Deception Pass Dash originated with the idea of having racers begin just before the predicted slack current in the Pass, and have them sprint through the calm water before the current gets too strong.
The inaugural race in 2006 drew about 30 racers and the field has grown each year. Last year there were more than 180 racers.
“This race is on everyone’s calendar now,” said Bill Walker, who coordinates the event. “Racers look forward to it all year.”
This year’s Dash includes a raffle that benefits Medical Safety Net of north Whidbey Island and Washington Water Trails.
