Depth Chart Out

The Huskies have just sent out their depth chart for the week and there are some changes on it, obviously.

Isaiah Stanback is not listed on the chart, which as expected, means his injury will keep him out. We may know more later after talking to Tyrone Willingham, though don’t be surprised if there isn’t any definitive news on Stanback, as Willingham keeps these things pretty close to the vest usually. It will be interesting to see if Stanback is present at today’s media luncheon. He’s almost always the first player to arrive, and has been there every week.

I was told by someone close to the Stanback family on Saturday that the Stanback’s injury is a bad sprain, and that the family was relieved that it wasn’t a break. Of course, that was before Stanback had an MRI done, and even a bad sprain can keep a guy down for a long time.

I think fans calling for Jake Locker to be the starter are missing the point, a bit. There’s no question Carl Bonnell is the starter, and should be, he’s earned it, has much more experience and a year left to play. The real question is who is the backup? On the depth chart, it’s Bonnell as the starter, Johnny DuRocher as the backup. As I wrote in our print edition today, I think Locker has to be the backup if this team has any real ideas about going to a bowl game this year. DuRocher hasn’t practiced nearly as much as Locker this year, hasn’t been impressive the few times we’ve seen him, and would cause the Huskies to completely change their offense. It’s possible that Locker is indeed the backup and Willingham is trying to not tip his hand, and Locker will travel to Berkley, as he has traveled on all the road trips.

Other notes from the depth chart:

At defensive end, Greyson Gunheim is listed as a co-starter now with Brandon Ala. That could have to do with Gunheim’s injury on Saturday, or it could be simply that Ala is playing really well, which he is.

Injuries could also be the reason why Roy Lewis is listed as a co-starter with Dashon Goldson at cornerback. Goldson is also listed as co-starter with Matt Fountaine at the other corner. It may also have to do with the defensive backs being horrible last Saturday.

Jason Wells is back listed as the starter at free safety after missing last week’s game with a concussion.

Michael Gottlieb is now the No. 1 at tight end ahead of Johnie Kirton, who continues to struggle in the blocking game, something that takes on even more importance with Stanback out.

We’ll have more after today’s afternoon meeting
