When spring training begins in a little more than three weeks, there will be a lot of new faces as a rebuilt team gathers at the Seattle Mariners’ complex in Peoria, Ariz.
Thankfully, a familiar one will be there as well.
Shannon Drayer, who handled the radio reporting duties for KOMO the past five years, has been hired to do the same job for 710 ESPN, which has landed Mariners broadcasts beginning this year.
KOMO, after losing out to Bonneville Seattle (KIRO’s owner) in bidding for the Mariners’ radio rights, dropped Drayer late last season. It was unceremonious and unfair, not only to a solid reporter who’s always prepared, but also to listeners who depended on Drayer’s knowledge of the team to deliver information they wanted.
Drayer also has covered the Seahawks and University of Washington football in her 10 years on the Seattle radio scene, but her love of baseball and everything that makes it a great sport became obvious in the way she went about her work covering the Mariners.
It’s only right that she’ll continue on the beat.
