E-W fends off Terrace challenge

EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors weren’t about to let a little adversity get them down.

After suffering an opening-game loss, the Warriors battled back to claim a 16-25, 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the hard-nosed Mountlake Terrace Hawks in a Wesco South volleyball match Thursday night.

With the victory E-W improved to 5-0 in division play (9-1 overall). Mountlake Terrace dropped to 2-2 in the division (5-5 overall).

“Terrace just came out really tough like I knew they would,” E-W coach Mike Pittis said. “I wasn’t surprised at all. They came out focused and playing great defense.”

The Warriors regrouped behind outside hitters Marissa Wellington (11 kills) and Cailin Fellows (10 kills). Setter Leigh Fishback set the table with 34 assists and four service aces.

“We spread out more,” Pittis said. “We did a better job of defending their passing and moving the ball.”

Middle Blocker Erin Lauber played a key role for the Warriors with eight kills and six blocked kills.

“Getting our middle blockers involved opened up the game,” Pittis said.

Libero Alex Storin added 21 digs for E-W.

Mountlake Terrace setter Christine Jenson, a sophomore, led the Hawks with 34 assists. Outside hitter Lael Swanson, a senior, contributed 11 kills.

Shorecrest 3, Meadowdale 1: At Lynnwood, Jamie McDonald had nine kills and eight blocks to lead Shorecrest to the 25-17, 23-25, 25-7, 25-14 Wesco South victory. Anna Herold recorded 31 assists and five kills for the Scots (3-2 in league, 8-2 overall), Tori Olsen had nine kills and Elisabeth Hoffman finished with 12 digs. Lynsey Rohrbach had 10 kills for Meadowdale (1-3, 5-4), Madi Seeger finished with 24 digs and Katie Cowan recorded 20 assists.

Kamiak 3, Shorewood 0: At Shoreline, Julia Church and Jordan Keller each had nine kills and Kamiak won its ninth straight match with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 Wesco South win over Shorewood. Melissa Fredericks added 17 digs for the Knights (4-0 in league, 9-1 overall). Shorewood (1-4, 2-7) was led by Caroline Soules (seven kills), Katie Daper (six kills) and Krissi Postor (20 digs).

Jackson 3, Lynnwood 1: At Mill Creek, Cerise Knakal’s 35 assists led Jackson to three straight game wins and the Timberwolves defeated Lynnwood 19-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-22 in the Wesco South match. Malisa Marisigan added nine digs, Angelina Rich had 12 kills and four digs and Dionna Kirton had 13 kills, four blocks and two aces for Jackson (2-2 in league, 4-6 overall). Kaytlyn Dill led Lynnwood with 14 kills and eight digs and Stephanie Mohoric added 14 assists for the Royals (0-5, 1-9).

Oak Harbor 3, Everett 0: At Oak Harbor, Becca Wheeler’s 28 assists, four kills and one ace led Oak Harbor to the 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 Wesco North win over Everett. Jennifer Jansen added 12 kills, two blocks and 11 digs and Clair Thiel had eight kills and two aces for the Wildcats (4-0 in league, 8-1 overall), who remained unbeaten in league play. Everett (2-3, 5-5) was led by Erin Vance’s 12 kills, Lauren Hope’s 14 digs and Mollie Postma’s 17 assists and eight digs.

Lake Stevens 3, Cascade 0: At Everett, Lara Sobotka had 10 kills to help Lake Stevens to the 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 Wesco North victory. Janae Harpham added 13 kills for the Vikings (1-3 in league, 2-7 overall). Olivia Condotta recorded 10 kills for Cascade (1-4, 1-9), Madison Farrell had seven blocks and Kristin Villanueva finished with 19 digs.

Mariner 3, Snohomish 2: At Everett, Shannon Peterson’s 17 assists and 10 digs led Mariner to the back-and-forth 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-10, 15-7 non-conference win over Snohomish. Brittany Rouche added seven kills and four blocks, Ludia Gavoronskiy had six kills and six digs and Shasta Golver finished with 17 digs for the Marauders (5-4 overall). The Panthers (4-6) were led by Natalie Kaltbrunner (12 digs), Jessica Yates (10 aces, 10 kills) and Joanna Balin (13 kills, four blocks).

Cedarcrest 3, South Whidbey 1: At Langley, Sara Houser had 13 kills and Amber Shields recorded 39 assists to lead Cedarcrest to the 25-15, 23-25, 25-12, 25-2 victory over South Whidbey (4-6 in league and overall) in the Cascade Conference match. Kristen McKinlay added 11 kills and five blocks for the Red Wolves (7-3) and Crystal Canady had 10 kills and 12 digs. Lindsey Newman (six assists, three kills) and Amanda Spalding (eight digs) highlighted South Whidbey’s effort.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Granite Falls 1: At Granite Falls, Ashley Broadwell had nine kills and served 10 aces to lead Archbishop Murphy to the 25-15, 25-9, 18-25, 25-10 Cascade Conference victory. Becca Gotz added nine kills and five digs for the Wildcats (8-2 in league and overall). Michaela Dudder led Granite Falls (6-4) with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Coupeville 3, Sultan 0: At Coupeville, Hayley Ebersole had 14 assists and three aces and Coupeville swept Sultan 25-22, 26-24, 25-15 in the Cascade Conference match. Nikki Griffin added 11 kills and Emily Marti had 15 digs for Coupeville (2-8 in league, 2-9 overall). Sultan (0-10, 0-10) was led by Olivia Chanthamalay’s 11 digs and Erin Street’s five kills.

King’s 3, Lakewood 0: At Shoreline, King’s beat Lakewood 25-14, 25-18, 25-16 in the Cascade Conference match. Kailey Trautmann led King’s with 13 kills and 10 aces and Anna Cesari added 19 assists for the Knights (10-0 league and overall). For Lakewood (4-6, 5-6) Liliya Kibitskaya had seven aces, six digs and three kills and Aly Stewart had four blocks.

Darrington 3, Orcas Island 2: At Darrington, the Loggers dropped the first set 20-25, won the next two 25-17, 25-16, dropped the fourth 20-25, then held on 15-11 in the fifth for the Northwest 1A/2B League win.

“It was a big league win for us,” Darrington coach Greg Powell said. “Orcas played a scrappy game and gave us all we could handle.”

Mandy Powell led Darrington (7-2 league, 8-3 overall) with 31 assists, 21 digs, six aces, five kills and four blocks. Caitlin Pendergrass added 12 kills and five blocks, and Maggie Wicken had eight kills and four blocks.

Orcas fell to 4-4, 5-5.

North Sound Christian 3, Mount Vernon Christian 2: At Mountlake Terrace, Elyse Bunger had seven kills, five digs and 15 aces and Victoria Patterson added four kills to lead North Sound Christian to the 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 win over Mount Vernon Christian (0-8 in league and overall). Chantelle Meeks added three kills, two blocks and two aces for North Sound Christian (6-1, 7-3) and Maylissa Chung had 14 assists.
