E-W’s McDonald wins Dolan Memorial

EVERETT — Edmonds-Woodway’s Ricky McDonald told his golf teammate Andrew Smith that he was going to try and win the Dolan Memorial Invitational for Smith.

Mission accomplished.

McDonald put together four birdies in the first nine holes and finished the day shooting 68, one stroke ahead of Kamiak’s Reid Martin at Everett Golf and Country Club on Monday played by 21 different local schools.

“I told him (Smith) that I was going to dedicate this win to him because he couldn’t play,” McDonald said, “And I did. I won the Dolan Invitational.”

McDonald started the first hole putting his drive in the left rough behind a tree. He played a draw, putting the ball on the green 15 feet from the pin.

“It was a real jumpstart to start the day with that,” McDonald said. “It made me nice and relaxed. It put me more at ease.”

Martin started and finished with birdies, drilling a 45 foot putt on the first hole to start the day one-under par. Martin finished with a one-foot putt, after his second shot sailed high into the air and hit right near the pin, with enough backspin to make it bite right next to the cup.

“I knew I wanted to make a birdie on that last hole, I just had so much adrenaline pumping through me,” Martin said. “I settled down and made the shot that I wanted and finished on a good note.”

Kamiak won with a team score of 296, Jackson and Snohomish were second with 310, Lake Stevens finished with 317, and Oak Harbor shot 318.

Nick Borges of Lake Stevens and Geoff Burks of Meadowdale finished at 73, and Jackson’s Taylor Pirkne, Oak Harbor’s Phil Reedy, and Shorewood’s Chris Babcock finished at 74.
