Blink and you’ll miss it.
Some of the state’s top sprinters will be on display today at the Larry Eason Invitational at Snohomish Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.
O’Dea’s Chancellor Young, the defending Class 4A sprint champion, will highlight a sprint field at a meet that has grown into one of the premiere annual track events in the state. This year’s meet, which starts with field events at 10 a.m., is scheduled to draw nearly 70 teams and approximately 1,200 athletes. Local teams include Cascade, Edmonds-Woodway, Everett, Kamiak, Lakewood, Mariner, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Shorewood, Snohomish and Sultan.
Young will be challenged by O’Dea teammate Taylor Mays, who enters with a state-leading qualifying time of 10.6 seconds (hand timed) while Young comes in with a 10.7. River Ridge’s Winston Cordis (10.8) and Mount Baker’s Joey Green (10.9) will also be in the mix. The 100 preliminary heats are scheduled to begin at 11:35 a.m. with the final slated for 2:55 p.m.
Snohomish’s Teri VanLandingham is expected to be one of the contenders in the girls 100-meter dash along with Decatur teammates Princess Griffey and Danitra Powell.
Cascade’s Whitney Hooks, who won the Class 4A shot put competition as a freshman at last year’s state meet, enters the Eason with the state’s best marks in both the shot (44 feet, 6 inches) and discus (138 feet, 6 inches).
Named after the former Snohomish track coach who lost his battle with brain cancer in 1987, the Eason Invitational has grown significantly in its 21 years from its first-year totals of 28 teams and 323 athletes.
Davis guns for state record: King’s sophomore Michael Davis will shoot for the state record in the javelin today at the 19th annual King’s Invitational today in Shoreline. Davis hurled the javelin 204 feet, 8 inches Saturday at the Cashmere Invitational for the second-best reported throw in the nation this year. The state record for the javelin is 205 feet, 8 inches.
Stanwood looking to repeat: U.S. 2 will be packed with track teams on Saturday. While most will be bound for Snohomish’s Eason Invitational, seven schools will be in the left lane of the trestle pointed toward the Lake Stevens Invitational. Boys and girls teams from Eastmont, Gig Harbor, Lindbergh, Shorecrest, Skyline, Stanwood and Washington will compete along with Lake Stevens when the meet begins at noon. The Stanwood girls won last year.
