EVERETT — The Eugene Emeralds refused to be intimidated by major-league pitching.
Eugene’s Matt Rose and Wladimir Galindo both slugged first-inning home runs against major-leaguer Charlie Furbush, who was making a rehabilitation start for the Everett AquaSox, leading the Emeralds to a 5-0 victory in the first game of Friday’s Northwest League doubleheader at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Eugene completed the sweep of the doubleheader by routing Everett 11-0 in the nightcap. The Emeralds (17-6), who lead the South Division, took four of five from the five-game series. The Sox dropped to 11-11.
In the opener, with two out in the bottom of the first inning Rose hit a bomb off Furbush that cleared the netting above the left-field wall, bounced on 38th St., then landed on the roof of the building across the street. Then after Jose Paniagua was hit by a pitch, Galindo hit a screaming liner to left that just cleared the fence, staking Eugene an early 3-0 lead.
That was more than enough support for Emeralds pitcher Jose Paulino. The left-hander, who came into the game with a league-leading 0.56 ERA, tossed six scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. He walked one and struck out four.
Mark Malave pitched a perfect seventh to complete the one-hitter for the Emeralds.
Everett was led by reliever Tim Viehoff. The lefty, who relieved Furbush with two out in the top of the first, struck out seven in 32⁄3 innings.
The only AquaSox batter to get a hit was No. 9 hitter Ray Guerrini, who doubled off the center-field wall with one out in the bottom of the third.
Things got worse for the Sox in the nightcap. Rose again went deep, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Paniagua added three hits and two RBI for the Emeralds, while Chris Pieters drove home three. Manuel Rondon and Enrique De Los Rio combined on the four-hit shutout.
No Sox player had more than one hit in the nightcap.
