SNOHOMISH – It was only an all-star game, but Lauren Hansen was thrilled to end her high school soccer career with a win.
Especially after the way things turned out last November.
Hansen, a senior forward from Stanwood, scored the game winning goal in stoppage time as the Wesco North beat the Wesco South 2-1 Friday night in the Sno-King All-Star Game at Snohomish High School.
Hansen’s last high school game was a 1-0 loss to Woodinville in the Class 4A state championship game.
“It’s nice to end with a win, and with a good win,” said Hansen, who will play at Utah State in the fall. “That was a good way to go out. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out.”
Hansen was also happy to end the game before it could get to a shootout.
“I hate shootouts,” said Hansen, whose 23 goals in the fall and 54 in her career are both school records. “It’s a bad way to decide a game. I was praying it didn’t go to PKs.”
Like everyone else playing and watching, Hansen assumed the game was headed towards a shootout. Eventually, Lake Stevens senior Raelynne Lee played a long ball through to Hansen, who scored less than a minute before the referee’s final whistle.
“That was like seven minutes of stoppage time,” Hansen said. “I thought for sure we were going to PKs, but Raelynne just hit a beautiful ball and I was able to finish.”
Hansen also scored the game winner in last year’s all-star game.
Donations taken at the gate for the girls and boys games raised $853 for the Ronald McDonald House of Seattle. The Snohomish Boys Panther Parents Soccer Club also donated half of the money raised at the concession stand, bringing the total donation to $1,083.
Next to the money raised for charity, the most important thing at stake Friday was bragging rights.
As the two teams lined up to shake hands, Marysville-Pilchuck’s Melissa Lauer summed it up by yelling to her teammates, “We have two years in a row of bragging rights now!”
The young South team should have a good chance at ending its two-game losing streak next year, as only six of the 18 players on the roster are seniors.
One of those returning players is Kamiak junior Kelli Stewart, who gave the South a 1-0 lead on a free kick in the 23rd minute.
Stewart, a University of Washington recruit, got a rare chance to play on the same team as close friend Kristi Kingma of Jackson. The two juniors are used to being league rivals, but eventually, the two both will be Huskies. Kingma has verbally committed to play basketball at Washington. Stewart said the two plan to be roommates in college.
“We’ve always been playing against each other as long as I’ve known her,” Stewart said. “So it was nice to be on the same team for once.”
Jackson coach Mike Bartley, who was coaching the South, joked with the two future Huskies when Stewart and Kingma failed to connect on a pass.
“You guys are going to be roommates,” he shouted from the sideline. “Would you get on the same page?”
The North tied the score in 70th minute when Monroe’s Keena Hopkins scored on a pass from Marysville-Pilchuck’s Kasandra Riozzi.
BOYS
South 2, North 0: The South team scored a pair first-half goals minutes apart and didn’t look back. Edmonds-Woodway senior Curtis Storer started the scoring with a header off of a rebound in the 30th minute. Four minutes later, Shorewood junior Stefano Johnson hammered a loose ball from about 30 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal.
“We’re out here having fun, but we still want to win,” said Johnson.
Jackson’s Kevin Springer and Shorecrest’s Andrew McDonald, both juniors, combined for the shutout.
Shorecrest senior Teddy Wingo, a University of Vermont recruit, had to be carried off the field in the second half with an ankle injury.
