EVERETT – Jake Mattson picked a good game in which to exceed his scoring average.
The 6-foot-1 senior guard, who averages 9.6 points per contest, poured in a game-high 15 points for the Everett Seagulls as they moved past the Sedro-Woolley Cubs in the first round of the 3A District 1 boys basketball tournament Wednesday at Everett High.
Everett, which came into the tournament allowing 54 points per contest, held Sedro-Woolley to just 21 points through three quarters before the Cubs started throwing up 3s to try to get back into the game.
“We played pretty good ‘D’ all night, we just have to remember to play at that level all game long and not let teams stick around,” Everett coach Aaron Nations said.
The Seagulls gave the Cubs their fair share of chances, letting them fire off five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, but poor free-throw shooting on Sedro-Woolley’s part kept Everett’s lead in double digits most of the game.
David Safstrom played a huge role in the win. The 7-foot center created all sorts of problems for Cubs post Josh Clayton, blocking 11 shots, collecting seven rebounds and frustrating anyone and everyone who came down the lane. Clayton led Sedro-Woolley with 14 points.
“We’re very happy with the win, our first district win in a while, and are excited to play on Saturday for the chance to play for a district title,” said Nations.
Everett faces Mount Vernon in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday at Arlington High School. Sedro-Woolley faces Arlington, which lost to Mount Vernon, at noon in a loser-out game.
