INDIO, Calif. — The Everett boys golf team came away from its weekend trip to the 2019 Champions’ Invitational with the invaluable experience of competing against top high-school golf teams from across the west and southwestern United States.
The Seagulls held their own with a 23rd-place finish in the 40-team tournament, which featured squads from California, Nevada, Arizona, Washington and Texas. Everett, the only team from Washington, finished the 54-hole event with an 88-over 952 at The Golf Club Of Terra Lago in Indio, California.
“Coming down here was for a couple of reasons,” Seagulls coach Darrell Olson said. “Number one is the opportunity just to compete in an environment that is not common for us — just to get out of the element we see in our neck of the woods. Also the opportunity for our kids to play and compete at a high level and what I think is a championship golf course. … That’s an experience you can’t replace.”
Junior Austin Duffy was Everett’s top finisher, firing an 8-over 80 Saturday to finish tied for 56th with a 54-hole score of 234. Senior Andrew Martin and sophomore Josef Kosnek finished tied for 71st at 237 after shooting an 83 and 81, respectively.
Junior Josef Kosnek tied for 128th at 246, and senior Andrew Olson tied for 151st at 250.
The third round took place at the club’s north course, which totaled nearly 7,000 yards and is the tougher of the two courses at Terra Lago, according to Darrell Olson.
Coronado took home the team trophy with a tournament-record 11-over par 875. Chris Waldrup of Palm Desert earned his second straight medalist honors at the tournament with a 3-under 213.
