Everett Community College announces hiring of 2 new coaches

Garet Studer didn’t have to wait long to make his first coaching hires in his new role as athletic director of Everett Community College.

EvCC has tabbed Rafael dos Anjos Marins as its new women’s soccer coach and Tansey Lystad as its new coach for men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track and field.

Marins has several years of coaching experience at the club level with local U-15 and U-19 squads. Before moving to the Pacific Northwest, Marins played semi-professionally for FC Wichita and the indoor Wichita B-52s, and was also an assistant coach at his alma mater, Tabor College (Kansas).

“Rafael has an obvious wealth of soccer knowledge and an immense passion for the game,” Studer said. “This, combined with his dedication to the academic and athletic successes of our student athletes, makes for a terrific fit for our program.”

Marins takes over for Tony Carrillo, who led the Trojans to a 12-8-0 record and Northwest Athletic Conference playoff berth last season. The program has qualified for postseason play in the past six seasons, winning the North Region title in three of those years and capturing the NWAC championship in 2014.

“I am very excited to represent Everett and bring the women’s soccer program to the highest level possible,” Marins said. “I cannot wait to see the development of these young women, both academically and athletically.”

Lystad has served as an assistant track and field and cross country coach at Bothell High School, and is the lead coach for the Cascade Run Club. While competing for the University of Portland, she was a two-time NCAA Division-I All-American and four-time NCAA Division-I national meet qualifier.

“We are very excited to have Tansey here on campus and know that she will be a tremendous mentor and role model for our student athletes,” Studer said. “Her organization and attention to detail along with her training philosophy will grow EvCC cross country and track and field into one of the top academic and athletic performing programs in the NWAC.”

Lystad takes over for Matt Koenigs (cross country and women’s track and field) and Jim Pearson (men’s track and field).

The EvCC men’s cross country program won the NWAC championship in 2011 and 2013 and has placed second four times. The women have placed second four times, most recently last season, and won NWAC championships in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

The Trojans’ track and field teams have also had success, with five men’s event NWAC champions and 12 women’s event NWAC champions.

“It’s a privilege to be given the chance to lead the EvCC men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs,” Lystad said. “I hope to continue the tradition of academic and athletic excellence set in place by the coaches and athletes of the last 10 years.

“Our focus in the coming years will be an emphasis on building the track and field program from a more distance-heavy team to a full-fledged NWAC contending team for both men and women. In addition to hiring a highly competitive and knowledgeable coaching staff to provide the best support team possible for the athletes, we will emphasize recruiting athletes who have the passion and drive to excel academically and athletically at EvCC and beyond.”

Studer began his job as the Trojans’ athletic director on July 31, taking over for the retired Larry Walker.
