Everett extends league win streak

EVERETT – The streak lives.

Honestly, it never seemed even remotely close to being in jeopardy.

The Everett High School boys track and field team extended its league winning streak to 18 opponents Thursday by dominating a four-team Western Conference South Division meet at Everett Memorial Stadium. The defending district-champion Seagulls won 11 of 17 events en route to scoring 128 points. The Kamiak Knights finished a distant second with 73.5 points, followed by Jackson (40.5) and Shorewood (21).

Everett coach Doug Hall said he was happy to see his team use its depth to overcome injuries and a decreased independence on some of its stars, who were resting in preparation for Saturday’s prestigious Pasco Invitational. “It was nice to have the younger guys step up today,” Hall said.

One of those youngsters, freshman Rendel Jones, impressed Hall by covering 39 feet, 101/4 inches in the triple jump. In his first time competing in the event, Jones placed third.

Clay Kincaid, Jones’ teammate, won the triple jump (42-5) and also prevailed in the 110-meter hurdles, the meet’s first event. Kincaid, whose time of 15.4 seconds barely edged out Kamiak’s Ed Raisters (15.5), said he achieved his goal of getting Everett off to a good start.

“It was pretty close,” Kincaid said of the race. “My start wasn’t the best it has been. (Raisters) was definitely pushing me.”

Kincaid’s effort helped Everett continue its Wesco unbeaten streak. The Seagulls haven’t lost a league meet since 2003.

“The whole team is wanting to keep the streak going,” Kincaid said. “We’re all pretty proud of our accomplishments over the last few seasons.”

Andrew Skorney (100), Kyle Lampi (1,600), Logan Ordona (400), Matt Kaftanski (800), Regi Gossett (200), Keith Bjella (3,200) and Isaac Hicks (shot put) also won individual events for Everett.

Thomas Callandret was the only double winner for second-place Kamiak. He prevailed in the long jump (20-8) and the high jump (5-10). Teammate Chase Mancuso, who as of last week had the state’s longest discus throw this season (184-0), held back a bit to conserve energy for the Pasco Invitational. Still, Mancuso managed to win the discus (172-0) and take third in the shot put (46-1).

Kelly Spady, another Kamiak standout, took third in the 400 but skipped his normal distance runs.
