Everett laps the field in South meet

EVERETT – The Everett High School boys track team won just seven events, but the Seagulls used their speed and power to nearly double-up the field Friday night at the Western Conference South meet.

Everett won the team title with 236 points. Kamiak was second with 132.

Nowhere was Everett’s domination more evident than in the 800-meter run. Led by Emmanule Magee, who finished in 1 minute, 57.8 seconds, Everett swept the top four spots. Magee, Kyle Lampi (1:57.9) and Matthew Kaftanski (1:57.9) finished in a pack 5 meters ahead of teammate Axel Stanovsky (1:59.4), who was fourth.

In the 300 hurdles, Everett’s Clay Kincaid set a meet record with a time of 39.78. “I believe that is my personal best,” said Kincaid, who also finished second in the 110 hurdles.

Everett’s Regi Gossett won the 400 with room to spare (50.21) and was part of the Seagulls’ victorious 1,600 relay team.

“The combination of our runners and the depth we have at throws makes this team unusual,” Everett coach Doug Hall said.

Oh, those throws.

On Wednesday, Kamiak’s Chase Mancuso won the shot put final, but three Everett throwers finished in the top five.

In Friday’s javelin, Everett’s Rick Gervasi set a meet record of 176-2 and teammate Andrew Stiger was second. Meadowdale’s Grant Domer was third and Everett’s Parker Burns fourth.

Records fell all over the track this week. Jackson’s Jeffrey Helmer set a meet record in Wednesday’s 1,600 individual final (4:17.43). Lynnwood’s Vince Kinney tied the meet record in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches.

On the girls side, all the buzz was either about the virtually even matchup between Shorewood and Shorecrest, or the anticipated 800 and 1,600 runs by Everett’s Cori Moore. Moore didn’t disappoint – she set a meet record in the 1,600 with a time of 5:12.5. She already held the meet records in the 800 and the 400.

“I was really happy about the way the 1,600 went,” she said. “I knew that if I could stay with Kate (Southcote-Want from Edmonds-Woodway who won the 3,200 on Wednesday) for the first three laps, I could beat her at the end. She’s a really good runner. It’s nice to have someone to push me.”

Shorewood set a record in the girls 1,600 relay (4:04.7), helping the Thunderbirds overcome their closest rival, Shorecrest. Shorewood finished with 173.10 points. Shorecrest was second at 144.60.

“Everybody in every event is going up (finishing above the seeds determined Wednesday),” Shorewood coach Howie Wood said. “They’re running great, throwing great, jumping great. I’m having fun.”

Shorecrest picked up victories from Kim Shen in the long jump (16-4.25), Molly Gibson in the high jump (5-2) and Becky Scherer in the discus (124-5) and shot put (35-103/4).
