EVERETT – The best high school boys soccer teams in the state will once again display their talents this weekend at Everett Memorial Stadium when the Class 4A, 3A and 2A state championships are played here for the second year in a row.
And it looks like they’ll be back again next year, too.
The Everett School District has applied to the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association to host the event again next year. The WIAA has not yet decided its spring championship sites for 2003, but there’s no reason to believe the organization would move the event given Everett’s bid.
Last year Monroe won the 3A state championship at the stadium. Unfortunately, no local teams made the final four this season.
Semifinal games will be played Friday followed by third-place and championship games Saturday.
Tickets for the event are $12 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens for both days. One-day tickets cost $7 and $5.
Play begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the 2A semifinals. Lynden Christian will play Elma in the first game, followed by the Connell vs. Othello contest.
The 3A semis feature two teams from Bellingham. Squalicum meets Camas at 1 p.m., while Sehome plays Hanford at 3 p.m.
True soccer aficionados might want to be present at 5 p.m., when unbeaten Decatur, the defending 4A state champion, takes on Auburn-Riverside in the first 4A semifinal. Decatur eliminated two Western Conference teams en route to the semis, beating Monroe 4-1 in the first round and Snohomish 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The Gators have not lost a game since the 2000 quarterfinals.
Kentwood plays Lewis &Clark in the other 4A semifinal at 7.
