Everett nips Kamiak on criteria

EVERETT – Sometimes in wrestling a loss can be just as good as a win, as long as you’re not pinned.

That’s the way it went down Tuesday night in the non-conference meet between Everett and Kamiak at Kamiak High School.

Everett (1-0 overall) defeated Kamiak (0-1) by virtue of tiebreaker criteria thanks to sophomore Laban Cook not being pinned by Kamiak’s Skylar Graika in the final match of the meet.

Crook shook off Graika “three or four times,” Everett coach Brien Elliott said, before losing 16-0.

The result ended the match at 35-35 and the Seagulls won the meet by winning eight of the 14 matches.

“If he (Crook) gets pinned, we lose. I had hoped we’d pick up a point here or there or they’d lose one here or there, but they didn’t. It was fortunate for us we were able to get the criteria to win it” Elliott said.

“It was a great high school wresting meet,” Kamiak coach Dan Hanika agreed.
