TACOMA – Western Washington University freshman Monica Gruszecki recorded a national provisional qualifying mark in winning the women’s javelin at the Joe Peyton Invitational held March 10 at Baker Stadium on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

Gruszecki, a Meadowdale High School graduate, had a meet-record throw of 146 feet, 10 inches on her first attempt, and surpassed 140 feet on multiple throws during the Vikings’ first outdoor meet of the season.

Attaining a provisional mark means Gruszecki has a chance to compete at the 25th annual Women’s NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 24-26 at the Irwin Belk Complex at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. Gruszecki’s result at the Joe Peyton Invitational will be ranked against other provisional qualifers, and if her name is high enough she will be invited to nationals.
