The Game
This one snowballed. The Tips got off to their best first-period start of the series, but it all fell apart in the second period.
It began when Carter Hart misplayed Scott Eansor’s shot from the slot. Everyone seemed to think Hart caught the puck – including Hart himself. But he never secured it and it trickled into the goal behind him.
Then came a couple of shots in which Hart was screened and before you knew it, it was 3-0.
In the third Dawson Leedahl was assessed a major (5:00) penalty and was ejected from the game. The Thunderbirds scored twice on that extended power play and the 3-0 game turned into a 5-0 rout.
Obviously the absence of Noah Juulsen and Carson Stadnyk were huge. Both returned to Sunday’s game though they didn’t practice Tuesday. Head coach Kevin Constantine said he had expected both to play Wednesday, but the team learned Wednesday morning that they weren’t able to go. That’s something we’ll keep an eye on.
The Turning Point
Really, it was Everett’s inability to capitalize on its three power play opportunities in the first period. If the Tips get a goal or two it’s a completely different game.
