So the first resolution regarding players at NHL camps came this afternoon with the information that Dan Gendur is being returned to Everett.
The goal-scoring right wing, drafted in the seventh round by the Vancouver Canucks in June, was one of the players the Tips had to sweat on, given his eligibility to play professionally in the minors given his status as a 20-year-old.
Gendur’s return is fantastic news for the Tips. He’s a guy who can put the puck in the net, and with the Tips in all likelihood losing a substantial amount of offense from its team last season, having a player like Gendur becomes all the more vital. If he can stay healthy Gendur is poised for a big season, and he’ll get a good long look from the Canucks next season.
It does, however, begin the process of overage overload. With Gendur returning tonight, there will be four overagers in Everett competing for three slots. And that logjam could get even bigger with the potential returns of Ondrej Fiala and Dane Crowley.
On a related note, defenseman Taylor Ellington, another Vancouver draft pick, is headed to the Canucks’ main camp. However, Ellington, being 19, is not a threat to play pro this year.
