Forsberg pitches Monroe past Mount Vernon 2-1

MOUNT VERNON – Ashly Forsberg pitched herself out of trouble in the 7th inning to lead Monroe (2-0 in league, 5-0 overall) to the Western Conference North Division victory over Mount Vernon(1-1, 3-2) on Thursday.

Forsberg pitched a complete game and had 12 strikeouts and no walks for the Bearcats. With runners on first and second and two outs in the 7th Forsberg struck out the next batter to end the game.

“Ashly came through at the end there,” Monroe coach Curt Eskeback said.

The hit of the night came in the top of the fifth inning from freshman Briar Stanley.

In her first at bat at the varsity level, Stanley hit a triple over the center fielder’s head to drive in the first run of the game. Stanley then proceeded to score the winning run on a fielder’s choice by Sarah Elledge.

“Really good fastpitch games are won by taking advantage of the mistakes,” Eskeback said.
