Four teams vying for second place in the Wesco North

SNOHOMISH – Second place in the Western Conference North Division remains up for grabs.

The Snohomish Panthers and Lake Stevens Vikings played to a 1-1 tie Thursday night. With Cascade also tying Thursday and Stanwood winning, it means those four teams remain separated by two points, with Snohomish (28 points) narrowly leading Lake Stevens (27) and Cascade and Stanwood (26). Monroe has already clinched first.

The second-place team gets a first-round bye in the 4A District 1 playoffs.

“Now we have to pay attention,” Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey said. “It may be a matter of winning out.”

Snohomish took the lead six minutes into the game when Brittney Marshall pounced on a free ball in the penalty box and punched it in from 12 yards out.

Lake Stevens tied it up in the 60th minute, Raelynne Lee receiving a through ball behind the Snohomish defense and putting it away into the far corner.

Snohomish had a chance to win it late on a corner kick, but the Lake Stevens defense was able to scramble the ball off the line.

“We had a lot of new players on the field and I thought they did a solid job,” said Pingrey, who was missing five starters because of injuries. “(The Vikings) didn’t have many chances. We had a couple of nice shots, but because we had different combinations of people than we normally play, we weren’t as crisp. But it was a good game, a hard game between both teams.”
