Free throws help University top Snohomish

SPOKANE – In a matchup of preseason top 10 teams (WashingtonPreps.com poll), No. 2 University outlasted No. 3 Snohomish 68-56 in a non-conference victory Friday night.

Snohomish jumped out to a 17-4 lead before fatigue and foul trouble took over and University rolled to its second win of the season.

The Titans took advantage of 15 first-half Panther fouls taking a 31-30 lead at halftime.

They then opened up the game, outscoring Snohomish 20-9 in the third quarter.

University finished 19-for-23 from the free throw stripe hitting seven of eight in the fourth quarter, compared to Snohomish’s 11 free throw attempts the entire game.

“They did a great job on us, they came out aggressive,” Snohomish coach Ken Roberts said.

Sophomore star, Angie Bjorklund, who Roberts and many coaches believe could be the best girls basketball player in state – ever – and “really played like it” led all scorers with 24 points.

Sydney Benson scored 20 to lead the Panthers.

“It was a great game for us, we can learn a lot from it. It’s a game you love to start out with,” Roberts said.

The Panthers finished 23-2 last season. University finished 23-5.
