Friday’s game deemed ‘Chowder Cup’

When the Washington Stealth meet the Boston Blazers in a National Lacrosse League game Friday night at Comcast Arena, there will be a little something on the line for the presidents of both franchises in the form of a bowl of chowder.

Stealth president David Takata and Blazers president Doug

Reffue have placed a friendly wager on the game, deeming it the “Chowder Cup” presented by Anthony’s Restaurants. The losing team’s president will have to eat chowder from the winning team’s town in a video to be posted on the winner’s website.

This week’s game isn’t about just chowder for the Stealth. Washington, which sits in third place in the NLL’s West Division, is fighting for the right to host a first-round playoff game and those chances would be greatly diminished with a loss.

“With all due respect to Mr. Reffue, he will be eating the world’s best chowder from Anthony’s Restaurants following the Stealth win,” Takata said in a statement released by the team. “Our fans are looking forward to watching Mr. Reffue enjoy Anthony’s chowder on video.”

Like the Stealth, the Blazers have a lot on the line this weekend. Boston has lost back-to-back games and finds itself in third place in the NLL’s East Division. Reffue is confident his team can get the job done on the road.

“The Chowder Cup is a fun way to build our already strong rivalry with the Stealth,” he said in the press release. “It’s never easy to beat the defending champs in their own arena, but we’re confident that Mr. Takata will be eating Boston’s best clam chowder next week.”

The game also features a food drive and fund-raiser for Northwest Harvest. Northwest Harvest will hold a raffle during the game, with proceeds benefiting the fight against hunger in Washington.
