YAKIMA — Through seven innings of Thursday’s game, it seemed doubtful that either team would ever score.
The Everett AquaSox couldn’t muster any runs, despite having numerous runners in scoring position and the Yakima Bears struggled against Everett’s pitching staff.
Yet plenty of scoring ensued from the eight inning onward, and the AquaSox took the game 7-3 at Yakima County Stadium.
With one out in the eighth, Everett’s Ethan Paquette lined a single to right field and Marcus Littlewood followed with a line drive double that scored Paquette. Bears second baseman Garrett Weber misplayed the throw back to the infield and Littlewood advanced to third and scored on the next play, a sacrifice fly by Jarrett Burgess.
After doubling with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Yakima’s Steven Rodriguez came around to score on a Westley Moss RBI single that brought the Bears to within a run at 2-1.
Everett (5-4 second half, 21-26 overall) responded in the top of the ninth with another run scored by Mario Yepez on Larry Gonzalez’s line drive to center field.
But the two-run lead evaporated as the Bears (3-6, 16-31) quickly closed the gap with two late runs in the bottom half of the ninth. Yakima’s Justin Hilt singled to center field to score Garrett Weber and Marc Bourgeois.
After two scoreless extra innings, the Frogs put up four runs in the 12th for the 7-3 lead. Everett pitcher Kyle Hunter closed out Yakima in the bottom of the 12th.
Through seven innings, Everett was batting 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and had stranded 12 runners on base, including two innings of missed bases-loaded opportunities, before finally scoring two runs in the eighth.
