Fun with the protected list

OK, here’s a fun little exercise. As always, Alan Caldwell has plenty of juicy WHL tidbits on his blog (link on the left). Recently he posted about the Mac’s Midget tournament, listing all the players on WHL protected lists on the participating teams. He’s done things like this ever since he began blogging as he’s the best source of information regarding that nebulous netherworld know as the 50-player protected lists.

Well, what’s nice about this is it provides a little more information about who’s on and who’s off the protected lists of teams midway through the season, as the lists are constantly in flux. There are nine Everett prospects on the participating teams.

Here’s the bits regarding Everett I drew from Alan’s post:

– Six of Everett’s prospects (Campbell Elynuik, Michael Berry, Mitch Boucher, Ryan Murray, D.Jay McGrath, Joshua Winquist) are players who attended training camp and are with their expected midget teams.

– One player who attended training camp on a tryout (Manraj Hayer) was confirmed as being on Everett’s list, though he played so well at camp that was essentially a given.

– Two players have been added to the list since training camp. Dylan Smith, a 1992-born right wing, plays for Beardy’s Blackhawks of the SMAAAHL and is currently tied for ninth in the league in scoring with 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 19 games. Brett Mulcahy, a 1993-born center, plays for the Okanagan Rockets of the BCMML, where he has five goals and seven assists in 22 games.

– Two players one would have expected to see but aren’t there are Justin Waskewitch and Kyle Janzen, who both began the season with Beardy’s and weren’t among the players listed. Waskewitch, a 1992-born right wing, has since switched to the Battlefords Stars of the SMAAAHL. Janzen, presumably, has been dropped off Everett’s list and has not been picked up by anyone else.

Anyway, there’s a brief update on Everett’s future, courtesy of Alan C.
