Like a once-fantastic athlete who is now long past his prime, Goddard Stadium is showing its age.
The home-side wood bleachers at the multi-use sports facility near Mariner High School in south Everett were condemned Monday by the Mukilteo School District for safety reasons, Mariner High athletic director/assistant principal Scott Powers said.
The stadium is still open for use, Powers said Thursday in a phone interview, but several areas in the walkways of the home bleachers need to be repaired or replaced. The problems are extensive enough that the district decided not to host the Western Conference South Division track and field championships this week because the stadium can’t accommodate enough people.
The two-day Wesco South track competition, which concludes today, was moved to Shoreline Stadium.
The condemned home-side bleachers at Goddard, which can seat more than 1,000 people, are about 35 years old and near the end of their life cycle, Powers said. The school district plans to come up with a plan to fix or replace the bleachers within the next few weeks.
Mariner and Kamiak both use Goddard Stadium. Their football teams play home games there. The bleacher problem should be resolved in time for the 2009 football season, Powers said.
Besides this week’s track meet, no other spring high school events will be affected by the bleacher problems. The middle-school track meet scheduled for next week at Goddard will go on as planned, Powers said. Youth lacrosse and soccer teams will continue to rent the turf field.
